What I Wish I Knew

A Series Sparked by a Child’s Curiosity

A few years ago, I had one of the most sacred and surprising moments of my motherhood journey.

Our eldest son was just four years old when he looked at me one evening and asked, with childlike sincerity,

“Mommy, can I ask Jesus to come live in my heart?”

My own heart swelled. I had grown up in a Christian home, accepted Jesus as my Saviour at a young age, participated in various outreaches, and loved God deeply. But in that moment, what I had prayed about as a mother suddenly happened. And I was the one responsible for explaining salvation to this curious little soul sitting on my lap. I opened the Bible and read to him what God’s Word says happens when we receive Jesus, that we become a new creation.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”2 Corinthians 5:17

We prayed together. His eyes squeezed shut, faith wide open. He said “Amen” with such conviction. Then he opened his eyes… and looked a little confused.

He looked down at his hands.

Then up at me.

Then said, “But I still look the same… I still feel the same… Did it work?”

That moment planted a question deep in my heart too.

It all started with a curious boy’s question…

If I’m New in Christ… Why Don’t I Feel Different?

It wasn’t until twelve months later that I discovered the truth that answered both his question and mine. And what followed were layer upon layer of powerful, biblical “ah-ha moments.”

After months of searching, praying, and meeting a dear friend sent from above, I came across teachings, particularly from Andrew Wommack. I finally discovered what the Bible actually says about who we are as human beings.

The truth is: we are three-part beings.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”1 Thessalonians 5:23

Spirit, Soul, and Body: Understanding the Whole You

Here’s a simple table to help make sense of how we’re made, and why we can feel so disconnected from the truth that’s already inside us:

So many Christians struggle because they measure spiritual truth by emotional or physical experience. I did it for years, and it kept me in confusion, guilt, and striving.

This was a massive shift in my thinking.

I always thought if I didn’t feel close to God, He must’ve moved.

But the truth is: my spirit is always in perfect union with Him.

“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” – 1 Corinthians 6:17

When we accept Jesus, our spirit is made brand new, filled, sealed, and united with the Holy Spirit. That part of us doesn’t grow or diminish. It doesn’t become more holy or more anointed on good days. It is fully alive, fully righteous, and fully His.

But here’s the key: we don’t see our spirit with our physical eyes. And we don’t feel it with our emotions. So how do we get to know who we truly are in the spirit?

We need a mirror.

Just like you use a natural mirror to see what your face looks like, you need a spiritual mirror to see what your spirit looks like.

And that mirror is God’s Word.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only… For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror…”James 1:22–24

When you look into Scripture, you’re seeing the reflection of your born-again spirit, the part of you that is already just like Jesus. Not someday. Not once you’ve figured it all out.

Now.

“As He is, so are we in this world.” 1 John 4:17

When was the last time you saw yourself through God’s eyes?

The Soul: The Valve Between Spirit and Body

Think of it like this:

Your spirit is full of love, joy, peace, patience, all of the fruit of the Spirit (for those who believe and accepted their salvation).

Your body reacts to the natural world, circumstances, pain, emotion.

Your soul acts like a valve that determines how much of what’s in your spirit flows into your thoughts, emotions, and even your physical life.

The more your soul (your mind) is renewed with God’s Word, the more open that valve becomes.

The more you focus on who you are in the Spirit, no matter how loudly your flesh demands attention, the more your thoughts, emotions, and life begin to reflect heaven.

And this isn’t something you have to wait for.

This can happen now.

If you’re in Christ, it’s already true of you. You’re not trying to become righteous, you’ve already been made righteous in your spirit. And by renewing your mind to that truth, you’ll begin to walk in the freedom, confidence, and peace that Jesus died to give you.

God is using their questions to answer mine.

What’s Coming in This Series

One of the most unexpected blessings of motherhood has been how much I’ve grown spiritually, not just through quiet times and studying the Word, but through the raw, honest questions our boys ask. Their curiosity about God has pushed me to seek deeper truth for myself, truth I wish I had fully grasped years ago. This series is born from their questions, my discoveries, and God’s grace.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why God is always good, and never the author of pain
  • How freedom was always God’s plan
  • Two covenants, two realities
  • Why the world seems broken
  • How to walk in freedom, peace, and purpose
  • And how to raise children rooted in truth

All of it will be rooted in God’s Word, made simple and clear, not through the lens of religion or performance, but through the love and grace of a good Father.

I don’t have all the answers, but I’ve found truth that’s too good not to share.

So wherever you are in your journey, full of questions, longing for clarity, or just hungry to go deeper, I’m so glad you’re here.

Let’s discover the Truth together.

With love,

Rolene
